This day is about you. You, who have come to this college, leaving the comfort of your homes (or in some cases discomfort), to become something in your life. I am sure you are excited. There are few days in human life when one is truly elated. The first day in college is one of them. When you were getting ready today, you felt a tingling in your stomach. What would the auditorium be like, what would the teachers be like, who are my new classmates – there is so much to be curious about. I call this excitement, the spark within you that makes you feel truly alive today. Today I am going to talk about keeping the spark shining. Or to put it another way, how to be happy most, if not all the time.

Where do these sparks start? I think we are born with them. My 3-year old twin boys have a million sparks. A little Spiderman toy can make them jump on the bed. They get thrills from creaky swings in the park. A story from daddy gets them excited. They do a daily countdown for birthday party – several months in advance – just for the day they will cut their own birthday cake.

I see students like you, and I still see some sparks. But when I see older people, the spark is difficult to find. That means as we age, the spark fades. People whose spark has faded too much are dull, dejected, aimless and bitter. Remember Kareena in the first half of Jab We Met vs the second half? That is what happens when the spark is lost. So how to save the spark?

Imagine the spark to be a lamp’s flame. The first aspect is nurturing – to give your spark the fuel, continuously. The second is to guard against storms.

To nurture, always have goals. It is human nature to strive, improve and achieve full potential. In fact, that is success. It is what is possible for you. It isn’t any external measure – a certain cost to company pay package, a particular car or house.

Most of us are from middle class families. To us, having material landmarks is success and rightly so. When you have grown up where money constraints force everyday choices, financial freedom is a big achievement. But it isn’t the purpose of life. If that was the case, Mr. Ambani would not show up for work. Shah Rukh Khan would stay at home and not dance anymore. Steve Jobs won’t be working hard to make a better iPhone, as he sold Pixar for billions of dollars already. Why do they do it? What makes them come to work everyday? They do it because it makes them happy. They do it because it makes them feel alive Just getting better from current levels feels good. If you study hard, you can improve your rank. If you make an effort to interact with people, you will do better in interviews. If you practice, your cricket will get better. You may also know that you cannot become Tendulkar, yet. But you can get to the next level. Striving for that next level is important.

Nature designed with a random set of genes and circumstances in which we were born. To be happy, we have to accept it and make the most of nature’s design. Are you? Goals will help you do that. I must add, don’t just have career or academic goals. Set goals to give you a balanced, successful life. I use the word balanced before successful. Balanced means ensuring your health, relationships, mental peace are all in good order.

There is no point of getting a promotion on the day of your breakup. No, from what I have seen so far, life is one of those races in nursery school, where you have to run with a marble in a spoon kept in your mouth. If the marble falls, there is no point coming first. Same with life, where health and relationships are the marble. Your striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life. Else, you may achieve the success, but this spark, this feeling of being excited and alive, will start to die.

One last thing about nurturing the spark – don’t take life seriously. One of my yoga teachers used to make students laugh during classes. One student asked him if these jokes would take away something from the yoga practice. The teacher said – don’t be serious, be sincere. This quote has defined my work ever since. Whether its my writing, my job, my relationships or any of my goals. I get thousands of opinions on my writing everyday. There is heaps of praise, there is intense criticism. If I take it all seriously, how will I write? Or rather, how will I live? Life is not to be taken seriously, as we are really temporary here. We are like a pre-paid card with limited validity. If we are lucky, we may last another 50 years. And 50 years is just 2,500 weekends. Do we really need to get so worked up? It’s ok, bunk a few classes, goof up a few interviews, fall in love. We are people, not programmed devices.

I’ve told you three things – reasonable goals, balance and not taking it too seriously that will nurture the spark. However, there are four storms in life that will threaten to completely put out the flame. These must be guarded against. These are disappointment, frustration, unfairness and loneliness of purpose.

Disappointment will come when your effort does not give you the expected return. If things don’t go as planned or if you face failure. Failure is extremely difficult to handle, but those that do come out stronger. What did this failure teach me? is the question you will need to ask. You will feel miserable. You will want to quit, like I wanted to when nine publishers rejected my first book. Some IITians kill themselves over low grades – how silly is that? But that is how much failure can hurt you. But it’s life. If challenges could always be overcome, they would cease to be a challenge. And remember – if you are failing at something, that means you are at your limit or potential. And that’s where you want to be.

Disappointment’ s cousin is Frustration, the second storm. Have you ever been frustrated? It happens when things are stuck. This is especially relevant in India. From traffic jams to getting that job you deserve, sometimes things take so long that you don’t know if you chose the right goal. After books, I set the goal of writing for Bollywood, as I thought they needed writers. I am called extremely lucky, but it took me five years to get close to a release. Frustration saps excitement, and turns your initial energy into something negative, making you a bitter person. How did I deal with it? A realistic assessment of the time involved – movies take a long time to make even though they are watched quickly, seeking a certain enjoyment in the process rather than the end result – at least I was learning how to write scripts, having a side plan – I had my third book to write and even something as simple as pleasurable distractions in your life – friends, food, travel can help you overcome it. Remember, nothing is to be taken seriously. Frustration is a sign somewhere, you took it too seriously.

Unfairness – this is hardest to deal with, but unfortunately that is how our country works. People with connections, rich dads, beautiful faces, pedigree find it easier to make it – not just in Bollywood, but everywhere. And sometimes it is just plain luck. There are so few opportunities in India, so many stars need to be aligned for you to make it happen. Merit and hard work is not always linked to achievement in the short term, but the long term correlation is high, and ultimately things do work out. But realize, there will be some people luckier than you. In fact, to have an opportunity to go to college and understand this speech in English means you are pretty damm lucky by Indian standards. Let’s be grateful for what we have and get the strength to accept what we don’t. I have so much love from my readers that other writers cannot even imagine it. However, I don’t get literary praise. It’s ok. I don’t look like Aishwarya Rai, but I have two boys who I think are more beautiful than her. It’s ok. Don’t let unfairness kill your spark.

Finally, the last point that can kill your spark is Isolation. As you grow older you will realize you are unique. When you are little, all kids want Ice cream and Spiderman. As you grow older to college, you still are a lot like your friends. But ten years later and you realize you are unique. What you want, what you believe in, what makes you feel, may be different from even the people closest to you. This can create conflict as your goals may not match with others. And you may drop some of them. Basketball captains in college invariably stop playing basketball by the time they have their second child. They give up something that meant so much to them. They do it for their family. But in doing that, the spark dies. Never, ever make that compromise. Love yourself first, and then others.

There you go. I’ve told you the four thunderstorms – disappointment, frustration, unfairness and isolation. You cannot avoid them, as like the monsoon they will come into your life at regular intervals. You just need to keep the raincoat handy to not let the spark die.

I welcome you again to the most wonderful years of your life. If someone gave me the choice to go back in time, I will surely choose college. But I also hope that ten years later as well, your eyes will shine the same way as they do today. That you will Keep the Spark alive, not only through college, but through the next 2,500 weekends. And I hope not just you, but my whole country will keep that spark alive, as we really need it now more than any moment in history. And there is something cool about saying – I come from the land of a billion sparks.

<img width='1' height='1' review

I have never before read a book on mythology leave alone hindu mythology ,but i do confess i have read Mahabharata which was ages ago.Devdutt patnaik is a medical doctor by profession, however he is a mythologist by choice ,and works as a Chief Belief officer in Future group (owners of Big Bazaar) .We all know that mythologies are not easy to decipher for a ordinary, aam (mango) people .However the book has been a surprise in the manner in which it has expressed the authors views and ideas on characters and the role played by the various gods and goddess in the indian mythology .Patnaik in his own unique way expresses the idea and story so fluidly and subtly that it has the power to let you see ideas in a complete different way as if it has given you a new pair of eyes ,which in turn has given you a complete different viewpoints.

It has challenged or questioned many views held over by many indians rigidly which includes me especially on sex and homosexuality and it has quite lot of relevance pertaining to current generations tug of war over Article 377 in india .The way it has expressed the roles played by the hindu trinity (Brahma as the creator ,vishnu as the sustainer and shiva as the destroyer ) has left me completely in awe of them .I have never seen the better explanation of Gods as given by the patnaik.

This book does not profess or idolize any myth rather gives you a explanation why it is as such . And traces it origins and explains it relevance in Hinduism in present situation. It has touched only a fraction of myths that exist in Hinduism ,but explains them in a manner ,such that after reading it one says "Oh i never saw/thought it from this angle" .

Rather than me going ga-ga over the book ,why dont you have a look ,I would give it 4.5 out of 5.

My take on "Hot flat and crowded"

I believe success of the "the world is flat" has definitely impaled my judgement of the quality of the books that metaphor-mixing friedman writes.I do not know how to classify his new book "Hot flat and crowded",it speaks about how green technology will be the future and how it can reduce the dependence on the worlds oil rich countries in the middle east and russia, which i always believed in ,however the author doesnt need to be so hard on the methods or techniques that are being used to generate energy, they are being used because there were no other alternatives ,friedman you better remember that we are developing nation and we do not disown our share of responsibility for being in the party for the rise of global warming, but it does not absolve america of the charges of being the major contributor either and expecting developing nations to take a larger responsibility in cutting down carbon emissions ,which are similar to that of the developed nation wouldn't be a fair game. The book speaks how renewable sources of energy are the future and how america should be investing in .The author has brought nothing new on the table and had a artistic licence to quote paragraphs or chapters from his earlier book "The world is flat" which shows that he is running short on creative juices needed for this book.He does have notable mention of how scandavian nations are satisfying major needs of their energy through renewable sources of energy and such ideas which are scattered across the book ,which i felt could have been written in more inspiring way rather than in a haphazard manner .If someone tries hard the book can be written sitting at home using only the good ol' internet to do research a better version of the book can be written .The author also speaks about how america has become isolated after the ramp up in security infrastructure to protect its interest across the world ,which have been well written in many other books and there was no need to write about it in this book which could have been more inspiring about we could tackle global warming and our energy needs in future . This book is definitely lacking in inspiring juices as compared to "The world is flat" and is definitely a let down .I wouldn't recommend this book to anybody

Review of "Big Bang"

I never expected a book on the origin of the universe to be so fluid in expressing the intent of the book ,i have previously read stephen hawkings "A brief History of time" which was filled with scientific gibberish ,but Big Bang had none of it ,maybe i might be exaggerating to some extent but Big bang is bang on target on what it really wants to depict . type='text'>Looking back @ 2008
1)Came Face -to- Face with scourge of Humanity (Cancer)...That particular day is still very lucid in my mind .The moment when the doc(top oncologist from Jehangir, pune)suggested that i might have cancer ..i just froze in my seat .... saw my 25 years go past by me in 3-4 secs it was then when i realized life is short, make the best of it, fortunately or unfortunately i do not know what to say it came 2 months before i was about to leave for USA for masters .I Started to hate the pungent odour the hospitals have .I had to go for many second and third opinions after which it became very clear that it was just infection and nothing else.Few days earlier this incident i had come to a conclusion that the religion thing was a farce. An idea propagated by mankind to control Human race.During those 3-4 days i just found my belief in god getting even stronger .I do not know where i stand today. But i do believe in this particular thought and it was reinforced that "When you want something from the bottom of your heart, the universe conspires it to make it a reality " .

2)Crossed oceans as in Hindi they say "Saat samandar par" to achieve my dream of doing masters in America. But once i did that, the view from here is not one expected before.Found out that america is just another country and nothing special about it,for once i realised i was an indian in america ,

3)Started to get hands dirty with Linux programming.Im really happy that i chose freedom and choice five years ago ,when i made a choice to switch over completely to linux and it has been a journey i probably will never regret for eternity .

4)Went on a impromptus trip with manoj and abhi to Alibaug @ midnight that too on bikes .Mumbai-pune expressway at night on bikes is a drive-by paradise ,that im for sure.
Wish ashish was here with us,it would have been more fun(He was sitting here in NY).

5)Met new people ,made friends ,adore some and hate some .

6)Tried to be a better son, friend ,and a better Engineer.

7)Read lot of Books .Drank wines and Ate good Food.

<br wrong..

The Sentinel says "Students from Richard Montgomery High School dubbed the prank the Speed Camera "Pimping" game, according to a parent of a student enrolled at one of the high schools.

Originating from Wootton High School, the parent said, students duplicate the license plates by printing plate numbers on glossy photo paper, using fonts from certain websites that "mimic" those on Maryland license plates. They tape the duplicate plate over the existing plate on the back of their car and purposefully speed through a speed camera, the parent said. for MSCS with specialization in distributed systems..I know its a good university with a very good Computer science dept .I know im trying to justify myself but i think its a good grad school. But im still waiting for USC and usc is damn good school with a very good research in Wireless Mesh Networks/Ad Hoc Networks /Wireless Sensor Networks but Masters student dont get to do research at USC unless you are a prodigy which im not .While @ RIT it may simply be possible becuase some of the professors are doing some research in it.

The dilemma that im in is i dont know what i want to be ...I mean i have be playing around with computers when i was in Fifth grade and hence only logical field for me in undergraduate was computer science .But my kind of computer science /programming is more of a open source kind of thing where you do what you want to do and the language in which you want to do in the company you work ,which probably wont be possible unless i become extraordinary in programming ( i can do it but will take time ).. But the ultimate AIM if its going to be to make money than i think im pretty good @ Finance and i think ill be good @ Investment banking .MBA than is a logical choice ...But than Masters is needed too my stint at Intel proved it ...And maybe i wanna do research too because kind of shitty work you get to do at the so called top companies in india is well know which i dont want to do... Asked my dad whether i need to be in IT ...he says A BIG NO ...SAYS YOU NEED TO BE IN MARKETING......more confusion prevails ...and the wait for usc is getting on my nerves ...

why cant those lazy bozos just wake up and give me a reject if they have too... ill be happy with that ill go with RIT and make my plans firm ...else if they give admit at the last moment ....ill die of the fact that i had a chance to go to USC and dint go there especially california ... i know some ppl call usc not worth while say its too expensive .... best i can say is they have forgotten to do their MATH ...and are just spitting out the words said by someone else without doing their Homework ...LET ME BE EXPLICIT HERE IF YOU CANNOT DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK YOU DONT DESERVE TO BE A MASTERS STUDENT......

BumbleeBee

Hardy Heron is Out........Party Begins

On 25tH April Canonical released Ubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu 8.04 LTS to the world ..it is probably the most anticipated Linux distro for a while with number of enhancements

Gnome 2.22

KDE 4.00 In Kubuntu

The wubi installer which i probably i consider the most important tool to take linux to the masses .Wubi allows you to install linux within windows without worrying about the working of the installer and stuff.

Enhanced photo experience: The enhanced default photo manager, F-Spot, together with improved camera and phone recognition means users can upload, tag, manage, display, delete, print and share photos with friends and family more easily.

Slick desktop: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS combines the latest GNOME applications with desktop visual effects, giving users a smoother, better-looking and more intuitive experience.

Longer support: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS is supported with security updates and maintenance for three years so corporate and individual users have a longer upgrade planning cycle. Those who want the newest applications will be able to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10, due in October 2008, those who prefer longer deployment cycles can stay with Ubuntu 8.04 for three years before moving to the next LTS release.

Pricing and Availability

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition is free of charge and available from 25th April from http://www.ubuntu.com/download.

Try it out its cool........

Apart from that im waiting for the Ubuntu ultimate edition 1.8 which is based on Ubuntu 8.04

I always believed that ubuntu ultimate is the operating system to be recommended if someone wants to try out linux .The feature list is simply fascinating and huge ,below is just the sample of it apart from the features that you get in the original ubuntu 8.04.

Its a dvd Distro containing Gnome as well as Kde

BUM,SUM,Anjuta

Glest

Alien Arena 2007

Bos Wars

RTCW - Enemy Territory

Action Cube

Scourge

Warzone 2100

Inkscape

Google Earth

Google Picasa

And Lots more

If you want to try it out head to http://ultimateedition.info/ and download ultimate 1.7 DVD

Shantaram.....Is it for real...

I Just Finished Reading Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts and found it to be one of the best pseudo-fiction( a cross between fiction and non-fiction ,a word penned by me) novel, i have read in a long long time ... The way the author has introduced some of the characters has completely bowled me over ...esp Karla and Modena and the way the author has described some of the scenes especially when lisa betrays Modena and when khader khan is killed in the mountains of the war ravaged Afghanistan made me feel guilty in a way as if i was the person who had actually carried out the act.The story is quite fast paced and you dont feel bored considering the size of the book which is quite huge considering the 900 odd pages in it.But at few places it does seem to drag especially when lindsay or Lin goes to jail in india .Hope that Mira nair does justice to that scene ,Infact the author himself is the scriptwriter for the movie,In an interview he said that the book is an excellent script for a movie because he visualised it as if he was writing it for a movie ,no wonder when you are reading it you do feel you are a kind of third person watching the whole thing from above the way you have spectator camera in doom or Counter strike.

The author has done an amazing introspection on life and has written a number of pearls of wisom to say that one can easily relate to.

"Every human heartbeat, he’d said many times, is a universe of possibilities. And it seemed to me that I finally understood exactly what he’d meant. He’d been trying to tell me that every human will has the power to transform its fate. I’d always thought that fate was something unchangeable: fixed for every one of us at birth, and as constant as the circuit of stars. But I suddenly realised that life is stranger and more beautiful than that. The truth is that no matter what kind of game you find yourself in, no matter now good or bad the luck, you can change your life completely with a single thought or a single act of love ".

"when we fall in love with someone our greatest fear is that they wont love us back, what we should fear instead is that we wont stop loving them.. “

“Some feelings sink so deep into the heart
that only loneliness can help u find them again.”

“sometimes we love with nothing more than hope.
Sometimes we cry with everything except tears”

"Happiness is a myth, which was invented to make us buy things".

Some of the characters i felt were quite unneccesary esp Johhny cigar (others may disagree with it but i felt it was unneccesary).Without going much deeper into the story line i would say whoever has read Maximum city by Suketu Mehta wil love this book.....

I hope Mira Nair does Justice to the book ,and hope Big B can live upto his character in the movie.

A Link To the Authors website
Link To the Forum
Movie Link.

Hello Blogger

Well I just migrated from wordpress to blogger and this where ill be posting my ramblings hence forward..... welcome to my new Blog....
